What is architecture

An architect is a person trained in the planning, design and oversight of the construction of buildings, and is licensed to practice architecture. To practice architecture means to offer or render services in connection with the design and construction of a building, or group of buildings and the space within the site surrounding the buildings, that have as their principal purpose human occupancy or use.Etymologically, architect derives from the Latin architectus, itself derived from the Greek arkhitekton (arkhi-, chief + tekton, builder), i.e. chief builder.

What Architects Do

The role of an architect is not just to design buildings. Through the design, the architect must also protect the health, safety and welfare of the general public and the users of the buildings. Therefore, like medical doctors, one must have a license granted by a U.S. state or territory in order to refer to oneself as an “architect.” Doing so otherwise is illegal.

How to Become an Architect

Would you like to become an architect? What classes should you take in school? How do you get started in your career? And (we have to ask) how much will you earn?

1. Decide if Architecture is for you. Architecture is a difficult profession to pursue, including at least five years of college, as well as the ability to deal with repeated failures. Architects deal with constant pressure from deadlines, competition, and new challenges. However, if you are passionate, it can be very rewarding.

2. Get an internship. Many architecture firms may be willing to hire people with little or no experience in the design field. You may end up doing mundane tasks such as making copies and organizing files, but the experience will give you an inside look at what the job actually entails and will also give you an idea if architecture is really right for you.

3. Apply to several schools whose admission requirements you have met. Make certain you send in all requested paperwork.

4. Work toward receiving your degree with honors as soon as you have been officially accepted. Since competition among student architects is intense, this will be to your advantage later on.

5. Work part-time and during summers at architectural firms, even if the salary is minimal.

6. Learn computer-aided design and drafting (CADD) as soon as possible. An increasing number of firms are requiring that knowledge.

7. Look for a position as an intern-architect well before you graduate. Get letters of recommendation from professors and supervisors at your part-time and summer jobs, and include pertinent computer skills on your resume. You'll need to spend about three years in that position before you can take your state's Architect Registration Examination (ARE) for your architect's license.

8. Prepare intensively when the time comes to take the ARE.

9. Send in your application for the exam well before the due date.
